Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD): Aerodynamic Analysis of 3D Lifting Surface

An incompressible, steady state, simulation study of a rectangular wing in 3D space using OpenFOAM.

  • Executed a steady-state RANS simulation on a rectangular wing (Clark Y) using OpenFOAM and the k-omega SST turbulence model to analyze external flow.
  • Validated the results againt the XFOIL results as benchmark and recorded a drop in lift coefficient from 0.83 in XFOIl to 0.55 in RANS. These effects can be attributed to the production of wing tip vortices in the 3D case.
  • Explained the lift loss to Finite Wing Theory and induced drag from wing-tip vortices, verifying the result against Prandtl’s Lifting-Line prediction
